About LRDR
Les Rues Des Refusés was created as a voice for artists whom — for whatever reason — are not an official selection of Nuit Blanche. With the explosion of renegade, off-program events that have occurred around this amazing night of art installations and activities, it is now time to have a guide that will allow participating LRDR artists to have their own rogue events formally listed. This guide will be web-based, with a printable version for you to download for your October 2nd cruising pleasure.
To have your events listed, please contact us at ruesdesrefuses@gmail.com.
{Please note this site is in-progress, and will mature as more events become listed. Cut us some creative slack.}
the peeps behind LRDR
Stephanie Avery was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. After receiving her special diploma in Visual Arts from Canterbury High School, she struck out for Toronto to get her BFA in Visual Arts from York University. Since graduating, she has worked photographing houses for the Toronto Real Estate Board, dressing as Gandalf the Wizard at Toys ‘R Us conventions, and serving as finger food mistress to the stars; all a part of life as an artist. She is now working in film as an Art Director, a field that combines her love of installation art with her love of paying rent. The rest of her time is devoted to experimenting with any medium she can get her hands on, and she is always looking for ways to make the world more interesting place.
Having founded Les Rues des Refusés for Nuit Blanche 2008 with the grass-roots introduction of a hand-crafted paper guide, Avery started a community of local artists that, as a group, collectively form a independent compliment to Nuit Blanche proper. With Nuit Blanche and Les Rues des Refusés 2009, she looks forward to expanding that community and meeting new artists.
Sonya JF Barnett has been working in the graphic design industry since leaving her academic career at York University and OCA [back when it only had 3 letters]. Never wanting to stray too far from her design roots, she has been immersed in print, web, motion and industrial design for almost 15 years, currently starring as Art Director at the branding, communications & design boutique, Hypenotic, in the Toronto art district.
Having also founded the racy life drawing class, The Keyhole Sessions, she decided 70 hour work weeks weren’t enough and now works with helping Avery cull artist events for LRDR and administrating the social media & web aspect of Les Rues des Refusés.
