by Jessica Del Sole

location: Queen Street entrance of Trinity Bellwoods Park

“And just as her brothers had finished telling her this the quarter of an hour came to an end, and they changed into swans and flew out the window. . .”

Ceci N’est Pas une Ville

by Stephanie Avery

location: various locations

Last Nuit Blanche with my piece ‘Caution: Art’ I re-contextualized every day objects into ready-made art and further transformed the city into a gallery. Using Rene Magritte’s painting ‘Treachery of Images’ as inspiration, I will continue my Nuit Blanche tradition. In ‘Treachery of Images’ a realistic image of a pipe is painted with text reading “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (this is not a pipe). After all, the painting is not a pipe, but rather an image of a pipe. If an actual pipe was displayed in an art gallery as found art would it still be a pipe? Or would it be art? Perhaps the phrase ‘Ceci n’est pas une pipe’ would be just as relevant in that circumstance. Nuit Blanche turns the city into an art gallery and everything in it becomes found art. To celebrate this transformation I will make numerous ‘Ceci n’est pas ________’ signs for all kinds of public objects which, on any other day would be regular objects, but during Nuit Blanche, are art.

The DCC UnafFORDable Banner Drops

by the DUSPA Collective

location: various locations

‘The DCC UnafFORDable Banner Drops’ is a piece that uses satire to make a concerned, public statement about Rob Ford’s politics. Rob Ford will destroy Toronto if he becomes mayor and this is a way to get folks galvanized to vote in October. We believe it is a critical time for Toronto to implement Transit City and with Rob Ford at the reigns, our city will become an even more car-oriented, unliveable city. We are speaking on behalf of all the concerned citizens of this city and believe that within our communities, we can stop Rob Ford in his tracks.

The banners read:
- Can’t AFFORD To Be ROBBED! Save Transit City
- Cyclepaths, Not Psychopaths! Anyone But Ford
- Ride A Bike, NOT A Ford! Anyone But Ford
- Transit City, Not Transit Shitty! Anyone But Ford

There will be one banner at the AGO and 3 along Queen St.

Effigy of the Future

Location: Queen’s Park and the surrounding areas

A giant 6 by 6 foot effigy of a robot god is being built and pall beared on an itenerary throughout the night of Nuit Blanche, and will stop in intersections to be painted by prominent graffiti artists as it goes.

We’d like to demonstrate the blind faith that we put into technology as a solution to all our societal and environmental problems, therefore this effigy will be worshipped by a large roaming cult.

The George We Can Have

by Sarah Campbell

Location: The Rage, 2 Kensington, Kensington Market

7:00 pm – 7:00 am

I want to present the image of mayoral candidate George Smitherman that I have researched and experienced, which is quite different than the one typically portrayed in the media. Components of the installation will include:
1.  An artist’s statement (media chooses what images are presented, and in what light….)
2.  Paper slips with urls for positive and uplifting Smitherman clips on YouTube (concerning the environment, road repairs, Scarborough and healthcare) and to insidetorontovotes.ca to learn how to vote
3.  Audio component – the audio from these clips will be looped and run throughout the night
4.  Write George a note – paper, pencils, and suggestion box that will be delivered to his campaign headquarters
5. A DIY statue of a Smitherman ‘figure’ veiled in mesh and covered in media ‘bugs’

The Mowat Street Marching Band

location: roaming Liberty Village, departing from under the Dufferin St. bridge at Queen St. West

The Mowat Street Marching band is glad to announce that they will be providing roving sing-a-long services to musical arts consumers of Nuit Blanche for a 3rd year.  Last year`s event was successful, with the band garnering huge crowd support (singing Kharma Chameleon) and even scoring a drink with Mayor David Miller despite our renegade status.  This year, the group has self-financed a new wagon to carry instruments and we have aligned with Café Phantasmagoria to provide music services to that venue.  All of our events are non-sanctioned, but founded in love for rockNroll, BurningMan and Toronto squirrels.  Join us under the Dufferin St. Bridge at Queen St a 7 pm, then after that in Liberty Village (mobile) and at Café Phantasmagoria (also mobile).  Also this year – more Neil Young has been added to our repertoire.  Look for the yellow Mowat St. Banner.

Nuit Brune: an open mic/poetry slam fundraiser

presented by the Kapisanan Philippine Center for Arts and Culture

167 Augusta (Kensington Market)

9:00 pm – 2:00 am

At the Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture this year’s Nuit Blanche just got browner. We invite you to experience NUIT BRUNE, an open mic/poetry slam fundraiser  like no other you’ve seen or heard. The best part? A portion of the event proceeds will go to charity. Making a difference never sounded so sick!

This year’s main event is an open mic slam poetry event hosted by Len Cervantes, featuring open mic poets from his program PSL: Poetry is Our Second Language and various open mic poets from the GTA. After four weeks of intense learning, writing and performing, the poets are ready to roll out their works in an epic, final poetry performance.

The event will also showcase art photography from two documentarians who recently came back from filming a documentary at the Philippines. All the art will be on silent auction that night to help support the artists who’ve gone a long way to bring back and share their research and art in the light of culture, heritage, and life poverty awareness in the Philippines.

The event starts at 9pm, with our DJ Charles Sy opening and setting the mood and tone of the event, and will run to approximately 2am. After the main performances do their pieces, the open mic portion will allow people from the audience to go up and perform poetry or songs. We will have video feeds at our store front showcasing the event downstairs as well, as from the results of last year, we expect a huge turn out for this one

After the success of last year’s event, “Charity is also our Second Language,” which supported relief efforts for the many victims whose homes were ravaged by typhoons and tropical storms in the Philippines, the K is bringing back another chance for you to REACH OUT and make a difference. Charity details to be announced, along with the list of performers!

Suggested donation: $5. A portion of the event proceeds will go to charity.
Generosity is welcome at the doorstep of 167 Augusta Ave.!

Hope to see you there, Toronto!

Parachute Play

presented by David Carey, Joel Dmitruk, and Caitlin Mullin

location: roaming through Queen’s Park, Grange Park, Metro Square, and other downtown public spaces.

As early as humanity could look upward, we have dreamed of flight. Rather than an ascent into the sky, though, flight can be more simply conceived of as the prevention of falling. The parachute was first imagined in the 1470s as a cross bar frame attached to a conical canopy designed to slow descent through the air. In fact, the word parachute emerged from two much older terms, para (”defense against”) and cheoite (”a fall”).

Parachutes have also made their way into imaginations and playtime routines of children. Following a renegade appearance in Grange Park at Nuit Blanche 2009, Parachute Play will fill the night with playtime – echoing our early dreams of flight. Watch for a roaming parachute in Queen’s Park, Grange Park, Metro Square, and other downtown public spaces.

Pop-Up

by Teeth

location: various locations

Advertisements have a tendency to pop up just about everywhere. From public parks to our computer monitors, it’s difficult to go anywhere or do anything without ads interfering with our visual landscape, their one function: to sell. Inspired by the aesthetic of ‘pop-up’ children’s books, I have appropriated various advertisements and transformed them into three-dimensional pop-up sculptures, changing their message of consumption into beauty and art.

Smurfigula – a Rhapsody in Blue

by The T-1000 Collective, Jonathan Osborn and Jeff Mulder

location: Sweaty Betty’s, 13 Ossington, look for the giant Gargamel

7:00 pm – 2:30 am

Following the success of past Nuit Blanche installations such as “Tiger Night” and “Shark Night”, local artists Jonathan Osborn and Jeff Mulder shift focus away from  the animal kingdom and  re-envision  the Smurf Village as a locus of absurdity and vice.  Papa Smurf and Smurfette may be absent,  but  one will be sure to see many of the lesser known and shadier inhabitants of the Smurf community, as well as be exposed to examples of unofficial Smurf culture appropriated from various sources.  Not appropriate for children or the uptight – patrons may be exposed to pornographic imagery,  body paint and giant toadstools.

The T-1000 collective: The T-1000 collective is a fluid collective formed in 2009 for the purpose of counter productive visibility for the arts. The core members are Jonathan Osborn and Jeff Mulder.

Jonathan Osborn is a Toronto based dancer, choreographer and teacher. Beginning his dance training relatively late at the age of 25, Jonathan trained at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, Jacob’s Pillow, and the Merce Cunningham School. Dancing for Canadian Artists such as David Earle and Bill James until a foot injury encouraged him to stop performing,  Jonathan subsequently became interested in investigating pedagogy and choreography for contemporary dance.  Jonathan recently completed a Masters Thesis on YouTube and co-produced a dance show at the Winchester Street Theatre. Currently he is working on a new work inspired by outer space entitled Goodnight Moon. Jonathan loves disco.

Jeff Mulder is a Toronto based visual artist. Pursuing alternative education from an early age, Jeff’s influences include Nicolais Tesla, G.G. Allin, and Ingmar Bergman. Recent endeavours have included ongoing international correspondence, costume design for site specific performance, and field work regarding herd animal behaviour. Jeff loves lasagna and poetry.
